Double Gold for NWRC Judo Champions

Many congratulations to sports students Kathleen McNaught and Michael McCay who both picked up Gold medals in the Judo InterVarsities competition in Galway this week.  This success followed their selection as recipients of the College's Elite Athlete Scheme.

Reminder: FREE lunchtime gig today

Mojo Gogo are a band making a name for themselves in the music industry - having formed in 2010 for a project on their Music course at NWRC.  The band are coming back to the College today to play a free gig in the Foyle Theatre at 1:15pm, and will be supported by bands from this year's Level 3 course. All welcome.

College launches Elite Athlete Scheme

NWRC last week presented the first ever bursaries in the new Elite Athlete Scheme. Five students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport received a bursary worth £500 including sports kit, membership of the gym, and dedicated mentoring and training to help them progress in their chosen sports.  You can read more here.

Garnett's, Limavady - Opening Times this week...

If you're in the Limavady Campus on Tuesday or Thursday this week why not try Garnett's for morning coffee or a tasty lunch.  The Restaurant is staffed by students from the full-time NVQ in Hospitality & Catering, with a range of fresh scones and traybakes at coffee time (10:45am - 11:30am), and light lunches through to filling meal options at lunchtime (12noon - 1:30pm).  No booking is required - just call in.
On Wednesday, Evening Service begins at 7:15pm with 3 courses for just £12. Book on 028 7127 8746.

College makes GAA Final

Congratulations to the staff and students involved in the College's Gaelic Football Team who reached the Corn na Mac Leinn Final at Queens, Belfast on Saturday against Cavan Institute.  The team beat GMIT to secure a place in the final on Friday, but the Cavan side went on to take the title.

LGBT Conference

On Wednesday the College will be hosting NUS-USI's Annual LGBT Conference in the Student Zone, Level 4 Foyle Building, 10:30am - 4:15pm.  Contact the Students' Union for more details.

Play that Pays

Today the College will welcome the Northern Ireland Children's Commissioner, Patricia Lewsley-Mooney, as one of a number of guest speakers at 'Play that Pays', a fun, practical event highlighting the career opportunities available in the growing playwork industry, which differ from Early Years careers. The event runs 10am - 2pm in Student Zone, Level 4, Foyle Building. A packed audience attended the fantastic Glamour Galore event by the Limavady Hair & Beauty Academy this week.  The winners from this event will join their peers from Strabane and Foyle in competing for NWRC's top awards at the Cross Campus Competition in the City Hotel on 24th March. Dine in College this week

Don't forget the College has a number of student run eateries providing delicious lunches and evening meals.  Garnett's in Limavady is open for lunch on Thursday this week, and the Flying Clipper Evening Menu (Northland Building) for Thurs 20th Feb is available here.  Please note the Flying Clipper is NOT open for lunch tomorrow, but the Brasserie & Larry Hill's will still have a fabulous selection of lunch options.  Your support ensures the students have a realistic working environment & is much appreciated.

Crash Simulator at Limavady

The PSNI and PCSP brought their latest safe driving initiative to the Limavady Campus on Valentine's Day - the Car Crash simulator lets student sit in a car that is involved in a fatal collision.  Read more via the Londonderry Sentinel.

First Health & Social Care Competition

The first ever Cross Campus Health & Social Care Competition will be held on Wednesday 26th February from 10am – 1pm in Room C311, Tower Building, in the Strand Road Campus.  The competition is open to all NWRC Health & Social Care students & is designed to identify suitable students for competitions at regional and national level. Further training will be given to selected students with a chance of being selected for Squad UK and competing at the World Skills 2015 in Brazil.  For more details email Kim Boyle.

Today Is Safer Internet Day

http://moodle.nwrc.ac.uk/Today, Tuesday 11th February, on global Safer Internet Day, we are launching some new guidelines that will help students to protect themselves better when engaging online.  The guidelines, which can be accessed from Moodle, cover the main areas of online activity where problems may arise.
Take the opportunity today to point your students to these resources.  Remember also, if you or your students have any concerns about online behaviour Student Services staff are there to help.

NWRC supports National Libraries Day

Tomorrow, Saturday 8th February, is National Libraries Day, when the focus is on the important role that Librarians play in providing access to information within the College and the community.  Within the College our Library staff play an important role in supporting staff and students.  For more details on National Libraries and Essential Skills, click here. 

Stop Animation workshop

Today, students from across NWRC will be participating in a one day Stop Animation workshop with Oscar Stringer, well known British Film Maker and Animator, at the Limavady Campus .Thanks to a curriculum project 30 students will spend the day working with Oscar hearing his experience and learning some practical skills. Health & Social Care Quality Mark & Graduation

Recently the College hosted a Graduation ceremony for the successful participants of the Apprenticeships programme in Health & Social Care.  This was also the first presentation of awards since NWRC became the first College in NI to hold the prestigious Skills for Health Quality Mark.  You can read more about this here.

..in the LIMAVADY Campus: Administration students have organised the REFRESH YOURSELF PROMOTION - a free event from 10am - 12noon in the Assembly Hall with free testing for skin damage, BMI, lung capacity and blood pressure checks. The Hair & Beauty Academy are offering mini-facials, nail treatments and hair styling, and Garnett's will be providing some healthy snacks too.
...in the SPRINGTOWN Centre: The College is hosting the Annual Inter-Campus Skillbuild Heats. This is the first step for selection of trainees to represent the College at the NI Skillbuild Competition later this year.  NWRC currently holds the NI Gold Medal and UK Bronze Medal in Automotive Body Repair as well as NI and UK Gold Medals in Tiling and Electrical Installation. Those competing today are hoping to follow this success.
