Admissions Survey Winner

Patrick Moran from the Level 1 Chef Diploma was selected as the winner of the Admissions Survey Draw.  The college pursues an active policy of quality control and improvement.  To enable this to be implemented the Admissions Department strive to continue providing the best possible service. Patrick provided feedback about his admissions experience to gain entry to his full-time course.  All students who completed the survey were entered into the draw.  Jean Browne, Administration Manager is pictured presenting Patrick with his iPod prize.

Recently in College...

Each week staff and students are involved in a range of events and charitable activities. Here are just a few recent events: Beauty students presented a cheque for over £300 to the Stand Up to Cancer appeal; L2 students set up a Young Enterprise business selling passive speakers; Leading Make Up Artist Paddy McGurgan visited the Strand Rd campus for a skills workshop; A Christmas pop up nail bar was very well received in the Tower Building; Two Catering students represented NWRC as part of the Yes Chef Kitchen Team; Workskills students hosted a Christmas Trade Fair, and, the Greystone Campus welcomed Mayor Alan Robinson along with pupils from Central Primary School for a hands on introduction to construction.  You can view photos from all College events here.


Randox hosts STEM mini conference

NWRC last week welcomed leading scientists from Randox, academics in Biomedical and Life Sciences from UU & QUB and representatives from STEMNET at W5 for a mini conference for pupils and students from across the region.  They explored the range of career options available within this cutting edge area of life science.  This is one of a number of events that the College has hosted in association with STEM NET at W5 to promote STEM. Could you be a 'Business Tourism Ambassador'?


Visit Derry work closely with the Western Trust, University of Ulster and Chamber of Commerce to secure a number of conferences from the medical, academic and corporate sectors. They would like to work with North West Regional College staff to attract meetings and conferences within our curriculum areas which would raise the profile of the College, and contribute to the growth of the city’s economy.  They would like to hear from staff who would consider becoming 'Business Tourism Ambassadors'. Business Students prepare for Young Enterprise Competition

PSNI Roads Policing and Young Enterprise NI called with Business students in the Limavady Campus this week to assist them with their Winter Care Kit idea for the upcoming Young Enterprise Fair.  Pictured are Bronagh Doherty, Young Enterprise Development Manager, and Constable Stuart Crutchley, PSNI Road Traffic Division, with Conor McKenna, Andrew Mills and Heather Ferguson, Terry Boylan and Norah Canny.  Their product is available now and will be showcased at the Fair in January.

Elite Athlete Scheme: Applications close 19th Dec

The College Elite Athlete Scheme is designed to assist talented young sports performers at NWRC whilst attaining success at the highest levels within their chosen sport.  The Scheme recognises the sacrifice in time and effort which may result from taking part in sport at the highest level. NWRC will provide some funding, a free NWRC sports kit and free membership of the NWRC gym. Successful applicants can also avail of additional Training Support and Advice from the College Sports Department. PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS TO APPLY. Essential Skills Awards 2015: Nominate Now!

The application forms are now available for Essential Skills tutors to nominate learners with outstanding achievements in literacy, numeracy and ICT learning through Essential Skills training. If you have a student who could be considered for these awards, please liaise with the Essential Skills tutors to arrange for an application to be submitted.  More details are available here.

Crossland Tankers staff celebrate success with NWRC

Staff from Crossland Tankers in Swatragh received certificates for successfully completing the Level 3 in Fabrication & Welding. Crossland also currently provide work placement for trainees from NWRC’s Limavady Campus as part of the Training for Success programme. Gerry Burke and Maria Mason from NWRC are pictured with the successful staff Pearse Brolly and Eoin Crossan, and Michael Bothwell, Factory Manager at Crossland Tankers.

Pop up Nail Bar today

Foyle Hair & Beauty Academy will today be offering file and polish treatments in the foyer of the Tower Building at their Pop-Up Nail Bar.  Treatments cost just £3 or £4 to include Christmas Nail Art. Available 10am - 12noon and 1pm - 3.30pm.

Transition students AgeNI Christmas Campaign

Transition students at the Strand Road Campus created a stunning Christmas Scene to welcome staff and students in the Foyer of the Tower Building.  Assisted by Danny McFeely, Annette Boast, Diane Traynor and support workers Michelle Brennan and Emma Jane McAneny, the students have also launched their '20p to make a difference' campaign to support AgeNI this Christmas.  Collections will be taking place across college campuses and staff and students are asked to donate just 20p each to help vulnerable older people this festive season.

Daniela wins FSB Award 2014

Congratulations to HND Business student Daniela Quinn who was named the overall winner at the Future Student of Business Awards at Titanic Belfast yesterday.  Daniela took the top proze at the prestigious event hosted by the FSB and supported by CollegesNI.  The College also won Best Video for its submission in support of the three NWRC finalists, Daniela, Ankush Vij and Eoghan Taggart: You can read more here, and watch the video here.

NIHA Success for Limavady students

NWRC Limavady was represented at the recent NI Haidressing Association competition in Belfast, and all four students who competed brought home an award. Leading the success was L3 student Tanith Speers who was placed first in the Junior Evening Style, and was named 2nd place in the overall Junior Hairdressing Championships.  You can read about all the winners here.

There have been a range of events and activities by students this week. IT students in Strand Road completed the NLP programme delivered by Raymond Craig; Early Years students presented a cheque for over £115 to Children in Need; HNC in Environmental Conservation delivered a Biodiversity seminar; Workskills Students hosted a very successful trade fair; Strabane Hair & Beauty students hosted their Grecian Extravaganza; and Health & Social Care hosted a Connected Workshop.  You can view the photos from this week here.

Construction students visit Altnagelvin

NWRC Level 2 & 3 Construction students paid a visit to the site of the new £50m Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital recently. Main contractor Mc Laughlin & Harvey invited the students over to observe progress. Site manager Jonathan Collins and former NWRC student Site Engineer Brian Grant conducted the informative tour, and the group was accompanied by Lecturers Paul Mc Chrystal, John Clarke and John Keenan. Michelin star career move for Oliver

A Professional Chef Diploma students who completed his course at the Strand Rd Campus in June has joined one of the most prestigious restaurants in the UK, thanks to a 10 day placement organised by the College.  21 year old Oliver Molloy is now working under 2 starred Michelin Chef Michael Caines at the stunning Gidleigh Park Hotel in Devon.  He spent 10 days on placement with the team earlier this year, and was offered a post when it concluded.  You can read more on his exceptional achievement here.

Strabane students complete NLP course

Last week Level 2 students on the Diploma in Information and Creative Technology in Strabane Campus completed an intensive 6 week Neuro-Linguistic Programme. Delivered by Raymond Craig the 16 – 19 years olds were challenged during the course to think about their language and their communication, to develop thinking skills and to evaluate how they are perceived.  The 6 week programme was offered alongside their studies in Information and Creative Technology to give them additional skills for future employment.

Tonight: Grecian Extravaganza, Strabane

Tonight our Hair & Beauty students in Strabane will be presenting a 'Grecian Extravaganza' in the LRC at the Derry Rd Campus. Tickets are still available - £3 payable at the door and the event starts at 6.30pm - if you're free please do come along and support the students who have been working for many months on their stunning styles.

Christmas Decorations Competition

The Christmas Season is upon us once more and in the true spirit of Christmas staff are pulling out all the stops to decorate their offices and work areas.

Judging will take place on Monday 15th December 2014.  The winner will be announced at the Christmas Festivities Event on Tuesday 16th December 2014.
