Annual Staff Charity Quiz Raises £1100

The College's 3rd Annual Staff Charity Quiz, held recently at the City Hotel, was yet another success.  Finishing top of the 12 teams was 'GoogleBox', a team comprising of staff from our Health & Social Care and Essential Skills sections.

A really enjoyable evening was had by all, with over £1100 being raised for the Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.  Congratulations to the staff involved in organising the event, with special thanks to those individuals and companies who either donated or sponsored the prizes.

Professional Software Development Launch

The Professional Software Development course will commence in September 2014 at our Strand Rd Campus, and at the other five NI Further Education Colleges.  The programme aims to provide HND, degree or equivalent graduates in non IT disciplines with the skills and experience required to take up exciting new opportunities in the IT industry.

Limavady Creative Writers Work Selected for Big Stage

Following a unique collaboration involving NWRC, Queen's University and the International Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, six Creative Writing students from the NWRC had their poems selected from a nationwide entry, and witnessed them performed at a prestigious poetry event which took place in Belfast.  George Brien, Tina Burke, Mary Hayward, James Finnegan, David Florida-James and Deirdre Devine saw their work, and that of their Course Tutor Liam Campbell, performed by professional actors at the Peace Poetry event in the Brian Friel Theatre, Queen’s University on Friday June 20th, alongside readings by renowned poets such as Ciaran Carson & Moyra Donaldson.  The professional actors performing the pieces included Tara Lynne O'Neill who recently starred in BBC One’s The Fall.

College Students are Childcare Degree Top Achievers

For the fourth year in succession, a student from our College has been acknowledged as the best performing student in the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies course.  Delivered in each of the FE Colleges across NI, the College has had four cohorts of learners complete the course, and in each it has attained the top student achieving the highest marks award. This year’s programme saw local student Kerry Curley finish as the highest achiever from a total of over 100 students. Kerry started the course after completing a Degree in English and wanted to change direction for her career. While completing the course, she found herself in paid employment in her placement and now hopes to progress to permanent employment. Fellow classmates Kim Redden and Claire Cross also achieved the 2nd and 3rd highest achievers awards and whilst completing the course managed to gain full-time jobs within the sector.

International Placements for Engineering Students

Three students from our Greystone Campus have been selected as the lucky recipients of international placement opportunities following their success in CollegesNI recent ‘BEST’ awards competition. Lee McElhinney, David Whiteside and Graham Grieves are second year students on the our L3 Diploma in Engineering programme, and as a result of winning a special Science and Engineering award at these awards they are now preparing for all-expenses-paid placement experiences. Lee and David will travel to the City of Worcester in Massachusetts USA for a 2 week stay at the local Polytechnic Institute, where they will take part in a range of Science and Engineering Projects, while also enjoying some social events including an exclusive boat trip to the nearby City of Boston.  Fellow classmate David will fly to Southampton to attend the world-famous Farnborough for the Air Show for his all-expenses paid trip.

Students Celebrate Travel & Tourism Awards

Students and staff from our School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport recently held a special prize-giving ceremony to celebrate the achievements of students on the College’s L3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism programme. 

The students were presented with certificates of completion during the event, which marked the culmination of their learning and hard work throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, while a number of special awards were presented to those students who achieved individual excellence.

Catering Students Distinctions Success

College Catering students Grainne Kerr & James Ryan achieved outstanding success on our Level 1 VRQ Professional Chefs Diploma course this year after achieving full distinction in both the Craft and Assignment aspects of the programme. Their success was also matched by Oliver Molloy who attained Full Distinction in the Level 3 VRQ Professional Chefs Diploma programme – NWRC is the only College in Northern Ireland to offer this qualification.

The College, in association with Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, is hosting a special ‘Business Networking and Upskilling Event’ which will profile the growing importance of Foundation Degree programmes to employers. Students and staff from North West Regional College’s Limavady and Strabane Campuses School of Hairdressing and Beauty recently held a special prize-giving ceremonies to celebrate the achievements of students on the College’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy programmes.  The students were presented with certificates of completion during the event, which marked the culmination of their learning and hard work throughout the 2013-2014 academic year.

HND Business Fundraise for Foyle Search & Rescue

NWRC Lecturers Dympna Harley (left) and Noelle Devlin (right) are pictured below with HND Business students Cahir Bradley and Aoife McAdams who presented a £624.60 cheque to Pat Carlin from Foyle Search Rescue, following recent fundraising activities which were undertaken by the students. 

As part of their unit ‘Managing Personal and Professional Development’, the students sold Foyle Search Rescue wristbands across college campuses, ran a competition to guess number of sweets in a jar, organised a sponsored walk, and obtained vouchers and prizes for a Foyle Search Rescue raffle.

Three students winners in recent CollegesNI BEST awards.

NWRC students Lee McElhinney, David Whiteside and Graham Grieves collected the top prize in the SEMTA sponsored Science and Engineering award for their Automated Calf-Meal feeder project. In the recent CollegesNI BEST awards.

Science, engineering, life sciences, software development and the creative industries were to the fore during these ‘Business & Education through Skills & Training’ Awards, a province-wide competition which celebrates the top creative and innovative talent within Northern Ireland’s six further education colleges in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

100% Pass Achievements of NWRC Workskills Students

The College recently held a special presentation ceremony at Strand Road Campus to recognise the achievements of learners from our Workskills programme.  Accompanied by their parents or guardians, the students received their certificates of achievement during the ceremony, and now have the chance progress into a range of Employability and vocational skill areas such  as horticulture, catering and customer service.  This is the 2nd year of the Workskills programme and once again the course has achieved 100% pass rates with all students achieving a level 2 extended certificate in Workskills and level 1/2 in Occupational Studies.  In addition, all students have achieved a recognised qualification in numeracy and literacy.

Limavady Campus Celebrates Creative Show

Students and staff from our Limavady Campus School of Media, Multimedia and the Arts unveiled a wonderful exhibition of creative skill and talent on Tuesday past during the launch of their much anticipated 2014 Arts Media and Multimedia show.

The highly impressive exhibition of projects marked the completion of student work on full-time and part-time courses throughout the 2013-14 academic year, and features a collection of pieces from students on Level 2 and Level 3 Media courses, the Level 3 Design Crafts course, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and the part-time Fine and Applied Arts, HNC Fine Art and Graphic Design (Illustration & Animation) programmes. Their displays will cover works in Fine Art Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Photography, Textiles, Print, Illustration, Animation, Film Production, 3D Design, and Jewellery Design.

Princes Trust Awards
